I’m a big fan of nachos of all varieties — from classic ground beef to tater tot-chos, breakfast nachos to dessert ones (hello, s’mores!). But they all tend to feel pretty heavy after a few bites.

Not these nachos. Well, depending how you load ’em up.

You can make apple nachos in just a few minutes’ time, but they’re unusual enough that they look impressive — and they double as dessert. The key is to dip the apple slices in lemon juice before plating them; that way they won’t oxidize and turn brown mid-party. If they make it that long, of course.

Pile up the nachos with whatever toppings you want. We used a light sprinkling of cinnamon and sugar (great for sweetening ultra-tart apples, like Granny Smiths), melted peanut butter, chocolate chips and a drizzle of honey. Basic, but delightful.

Apple Nachos

Ingredients

  • 4 large apples (Try Gala, Honeycrisp or Granny Smith)
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice, for preserving apples
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 3 tablespoons semisweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the apples, then dip in lemon juice so the apples won't brown. Place the apples on a plate.
  2. Combine the sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle the two on the apples.
  3. Top with melted peanut butter, honey and chocolate chips. Serve immediately.
