In part two of our fitness series, Michelle Joy shares her group’s favorite recipe for a protein shake that will make you forget everything you’ve heard about post-workout drinks.

Probably one of the greatest things about the workout is the protein shake we have afterwards. Ours vary a bit depending on what we have on hand, but here is the gist of it:

Berry-Cupcake Protein Shake
Author:
Recipe type: Drinks
Cuisine: American
Prep time:
Total time:
Serves: 1

Kitchen gadgets needed: Tablespoon, cup, blender
Ingredients
  • 1 handful of frozen strawberries
  • 1 banana
  • 1 scoop of QuickTrim PROnom 23 Vanilla Cupcake Batter protein
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter
  • 1 handful of ice
  • About 6-8 ounces of orange juice (or apple juice)
Instructions
  1. Toss in the strawberries, banana, protein powder and a spoonful of peanut butter into a blender, then top with ice. Pour in orange or apple juice until the blender is about ⅓ to ½ full, depending on whether you like thicker or thinner shakes.
  2. Blend until everything is combined. Enjoy!

Depending on how much people want, we do 1-2 batches (I prefer larger glasses personally) for the group. Quite a few of us have been burned by protein in the past where it tasted absolutely dreadful. This stuff is AMAZING. I got a tip from some people on my workout-logging website Fitocracy (it lets you level up by working out!) that this tastes like liquid cupcakes. It does. When we do just the powder, ice, and orange juice= creamsicle.

Probably the most important thing is to make sure that you’re drinking LOTS of water. No matter what workout you’re doing, especially if you’re taking creatine and/or protein. So grab a water bottle and fill it up every time it empties! Other most important thing, do a workout you enjoy. No matter what it is. If you don’t enjoy it, you’ll have a harder time sticking to it. So find something you enjoy and do that!
