5 Items You Must Have for Move-In Day

No matter if you’re a freshman or a super-super-super senior, there’s a thrilling buzz about Move-In Day. You’re getting to outfit your own place, you’re meeting new people and welcoming old friends, and everything feels new, like it’s brimming with possibility.

Then, about 30 minutes into it, your dad starts cursing as he tries to help you haul a television up four flights of stairs, you’re panicking because your car is double-parked, and OMIGOD, would someone please turn on the air conditioning? And wait a minute — you can practically touch the walls with your arms outstretched, and you’re supposed to be sharing this space with a total stranger. One whose Facebook profile lists interests like “High School Musical marathons and Justin Bieber.”

Welcome to Move-In Day.

No matter how hard you plan, chances are you’ll run into a few frustrating snags, but it doesn’t have to be all bad. In fact, if you bring these five essential items, you’ll start the year with a smile.

1. Blender — Make this the very first thing you bring to your room, along with a cooler full of fruit and ice and some plastic cups. Set it up immediately and start making smoothies to hand out to other overheated movers (and future floormates). It’ll keep the sweltering summer heat at bay. Since you have a blender, why don’t you try this Strawberry Slushie recipe? It’s a serious thirst-quencher.

2. Cookies — Want to make friends instantly? Show up with a tray of cookies. Smoothies are swell, but they’re nothing compared to doughy, homemade cookie studded with chocolate chips. Bonus points if they’re Mom’s recipe. It’ll help keep homesickness at bay. (Shown: Gluten-free Chocolate Chip Cookies)

3. Mattress Pad — Most dorm-issued beds aren’t very plush, and they’re usually covered with a vinyl-esque coating so they can be easily cleaned and sanitized (and sadly, after one week in the dorms, you’ll see why colleges insist on it). A mattress pad will give you a layer of comfort. You can’t do anything about the jail-cell-sized space, but you don’t have to sleep on a prison mattress. (Shown: Laura Ashley Home Overfilled XL Twin Mattress Pad, $29.99, Bed Bath & Beyond)

4. Shower Caddy — If you’re trying to juggle shampoo and conditioner bottles, body wash, a loofah, shaving cream and a razor on your way to the showers, it’s easy to forget some other essentials — like a towel. Or a change of clothes. Save yourself the hassle with this simple carryall. Plus, you can stock it before you move, making unpacking a breeze. (Shown: Geo Bath Beauty Bin, $25-$35, PB Teen)

5. Fuzzy slippers — It’s your place. Make yourself comfortable. Slip into these while you unpack, and you’ll feel a lot more relaxed as you settle into your new place. Don’t even try to act too cool for them. After one week spent traversing the campus for classes, meals and everything in between, you’ll appreciate the relief that a pillowy pair can bring.
